Anti-depredation squads were formed in villages to incentivise communities to join hands with the Forest Department to respond to elephants together. However, the searchlights and firecrackers the squads used to drive elephants away possibly created a ‘landscape of fear’, forcing elephants to stray into more dangerous situations
